Ngai Wing Lam Ant
Ngai Wing Lam was born in Hong Kong in 1986. She received a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Visual Arts from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University in 2008. Her work has been exhibited in Hong Kong, London, and elsewhere. She currently lives and works in Hong Kong.
Ngai’s practice centers on surreal and introspective painting. Inspired by her childhood experiences, dreams, and memories of keeping ornamental fish, she frequently depicts humanoid figures with koi heads, which have become a distinctive visual motif in her work. These hybrid figures embody her exploration of relationships, identity, and states of ambiguity. Their silent, emotionally inscrutable faces both conceal their inner feelings and reflect the complexities of human relationships, as well as the fear of difference and rejection. Set against the urban landscapes of Hong Kong, Ngai’s paintings capture the elusive tension between reality and fantasy. Through narratives that shift between dreamlike and quotidian registers, she explores personal experience and broader social conditions, inviting viewers into stories that are at once alienating and intimate.
