Amy Hui Li 李慧

Overview

Amy Hui Li (b. 1997, China) received her BA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2020, and her MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2023. Her works have been exhibited in cities including London, New York, Shanghai, and Taichung. She currently lives and works in London.

Li presents her works with titles rendered exclusively in lowercase, a gesture that conveys a sense of humility. Conceiving painting as a multilayered bodily structure, she works on both sides of the surface to reveal fragments of interior space, transforming the work into an inwardly unfolding corporeal field through which she explores deep-seated emotions and memory. Employing mixed media, oil paint, and wool fibers on organza, Li challenges the definition and boundaries of what may be considered as “sculptural painting.” Subtle variations in transparency and material texture articulate vulnerability, candor, and the rare courage of self-exposure. By transforming fiber-based materials into a skin-like presence, she stages an ongoing cycle of tearing and mending—an interplay of destruction and care—seeking to elicit resonance in the viewer while prompting introspection and an encounter with the inner self.
