“Water is both benevolent and soft. The quality of water is layered; silent when small, raging when huge.” – Hou Junjie

Hou Junjie was born in 1985 in Ya'an, Sichuan province, China. He graduated from the department of Painting in Oil Painting Specialty at Southwest Minzu University in 2008. Currently he lives and works in Blue Roof Art District in Chengdu and teaches at Sichuan Vocational college of Arts. He has joined many contemporary art shows on the Mainland and overseas, and his works were collected by several art institutes and collectors.

Based on the connotation of Chinese culture, his creation expresses Eastern pattern and vibe by oil painting methods and redefines nature and tradition in the lieu of contemporary era at the same time. By much experimentation, he attempts to find the possibilities of integrating Western oil paint materials technically with Eastern art forms to present a contemporary art form of Eastern painting and thus creating his unique art style.

The debut solo exhibition in Taiwan “The Supreme Good is Like Water” is his latest series of works from the past three years. It consists of four parts, the “Observing Ripples”, “Listening to the Spring”, “Hearing the River”, and “Still Water”, and all of them related to landscapes and connecting with the inner feelings. Through the deliciated scenery images, he creates an Eastern vibe full of quietness and peacefulness feelings, guiding viewers to find a hint of casualness in the wilderness and their own “mountains” and “water” in their hearts.
