Michael Rikio Ming Hee Ho

Overview

Michael Rikio Ming Hee Ho, born in 1996, Kamuela, Hawaiʻi, is a Japanese and Cantonese American artist. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of California in 2018. Ho’s works have been exhibited in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, New York, and Los Angeles. He featured in various international art fairs, including Art Busan, Tokyo Gendai, and Taipei Dangdai. Currently, he is represented by Kotaro Nukaga in Tokyo, and the artist is also based in Tokyo.

Ho’s practice employs an integrated system of language, collage logic, and trompe-l’œil painting to examine how people emotionally insulate themselves and perform a sense of belonging in this post-social-media era. His works often take the shape of trompe-l’œil box forms, functioning as surrogates for the body that assert space through posture, leaning, or tilting like participants in a conversation. In the Contemporary context, defining oneself now often carries the anxiety of having to perform identity and belonging. Developed in response to Tokyo’s compressed urban scale, these box-forms operate as containers for accumulated meaning. He collaged images from Hawaiʻi’s creole history, personal photos, and ephemera gathered on their surfaces, alongside pieces of text that read like a ruminating inner monologue. The phrases resemble those unsent late-night messages or the private notes you hide deep in your phone, oscillating between a particularly contemporary kind of wry optimism and self-aware insecurity.
